Why White Roofs?
Over one half the population of the United States is
concentrated in urban areas. In these centers there is a tendency for
temperatures to reach 3-8 degrees Fahrenheit above those in outlying rural
areas. The phenomenon creates an area known as “the urban heat island”.
It is believed that these urban heat islands will pose long
term economic as well as health related problems for its occupants. In addition
to higher ambient temperature, these areas have greater smog, utilize more
energy, and pose greater health risks for those with asthma and respiratory
problems. The higher temperatures increase the consumption of energy, increase
the potential for energy shortages and increase the consumption of our
non-renewable resources. They diminish the quality of life. To combat this occurrence, the federal government, in
cooperation with the utility industry, has undertaken to analyze the causes and
reduce the consequences of heat islands.
Of the difference in temperature from rural to urban areas,
56% is attributable to less vegetation, 38% to dark roofing,
and 6% to dark paving.
Of the many proposed solutions being discussed and
undertaken, one that is receiving increasing interest is the utilization of
white roof membranes to reduce the amount of heat retained by black
heat-absorbing roofs. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through their
Energy Star Roof Products Program has identified a list of roofing products
that increase solar reflectivity and lower energy costs.
NorthCross began installing white heat reflective roofs since 1993. Our experience has shown that in addition to being highly energy
efficient and reducing energy costs, the roofs reduce annual expenditures for
maintenance. Because the roof is up to 85% heat reflective, air-conditioning
units cycle less often, reducing wear and tear on the motor and parts. Fewer
cycles reduces maintenance while prolonging replacement.
Energy savings from the use of white membranes can be
substantiated and verified. We invite you to call us for a no-obligation roof evaluation to determine if a
white roof is the best choice for your facility. If you are contemplating
roofing work and want to see how a white roof can reduce your energy costs
while at the same time keep you watertight, please call Northcross Roofing and Waterproofing today.
White roofs are the practical and energy efficient
solution to any roofing problem.
